Mills College President’s House |
|
Our charge was to sensitively add a wing to what was originally an
1870's farm house. The Board of Trustees at Mills College, the college
President, and a caterer were some of the decision makers involved.
We assessed the diverse requests and gained consensus.

|
The new wing consists of, upstairs, a private master suite for the
college president, and downstairs, a large kitchen, a spacious family
room, and various service functions. A new staircase allows family
members to privately access the kitchen from the bedroom wing, solving
the problem of interrupting formal dinner parties in one's pajamas.
|
|
The kitchen was a special challenge due to its required duel functions:
as a comfortable kitchen for the resident family of four for every day,
and as a catering kitchen for the public, and often large gatherings held
several times a week at the house.
|
|
Working with traditional materials and taking cues from the historic
original structure, the resulting house successfully balances the public
and private aspects while maintaining its character and history.
